Caring for your Foxtail Palm
Foxtail Palm (Wodyetia bifurcata) is a striking and elegant tropical tree known for its feathery, arching fronds and smooth, self-cleaning trunk. Native to the remote areas of northern Australia, this palm is a popular choice for landscaping in tropical and subtropical regions due to its fast growth, minimal maintenance, and aesthetic appeal. Here’s an in-depth care guide to help you grow and maintain a healthy Foxtail Palm.
Light
Foxtail Palms thrive in full sun, which promotes strong growth and lush foliage. They require at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily, making them ideal for open, sunny locations in your garden. While they can tolerate partial shade, insufficient light may lead to slower growth and less vibrant fronds. If you’re growing a Foxtail Palm indoors or in a less sunny spot, ensure it receives as much bright, indirect light as possible to mimic its natural habitat.
Soil
Foxtail Palms are adaptable to a variety of soil types, but they prefer well-draining, sandy soil. They can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral pH levels (6.0 to 7.5). Good drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogged roots, which can lead to root rot. When planting, mix organic matter such as compost or peat moss into the soil to enhance fertility and drainage. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain water and can cause root problems.
Water
Foxtail Palms have moderate water needs. Water them deeply and regularly during the first year to establish a robust root system. Once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant but will perform best with consistent moisture. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, ensuring the soil remains evenly moist but not soggy. In areas with high rainfall, ensure good drainage to prevent water from pooling around the roots.
If growing indoors or in a dry climate, increase humidity around the palm by misting the fronds regularly or placing a humidifier nearby.
Fertilization
Regular fertilization is key to maintaining the health and vigor of Foxtail Palms. Use a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer with essential micronutrients, including magnesium, manganese, and iron. Fertilize every 2-3 months during the growing season (spring and summer), following the manufacturer’s recommended application rates. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to nutrient imbalances and damage the roots. Reduced feeding is necessary during the dormant season (fall and winter).
Pruning
Foxtail Palms are self-cleaning, meaning their old fronds naturally fall off, reducing the need for pruning. However, you can remove any yellowing or damaged fronds to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent potential pest issues. Use clean, sharp pruning tools to make precise cuts. Avoid cutting green fronds, as they are essential for photosynthesis and overall palm health.
Pest and Disease Management
Foxtail Palms are relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but they can still be affected by common issues such as spider mites, scale insects, and fungal infections. Regularly inspect your palms for signs of pests, such as discolored or stippled leaves, and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Ensure proper air circulation around the palm to reduce the risk of fungal diseases, and avoid overhead watering to prevent moisture-related issues.
Propagation
Foxtail Palms are typically propagated from seeds, which can be collected from the ripe fruit. Soak the seeds in water for 24-48 hours to soften the outer shell, then plant them in a well-draining seed mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain temperatures around 80°F (27°C) for optimal germination. Germination can take several months, so patience is required. Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of leaves, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the ground.

I got two of these and a Pygmy Date Palm in March 2022. I planted them in the backyard. They were beautiful. I watched them getting taller and taller. I fertilized them every three months (my soil sucks). These trees were looking great! Then I left for the entire month of December… we had two days of freezing temps in Savannah, Ga. It killed both trees plus my Pygmy Date Palm. So, I said all that to point out… if it EVER freezes where you live, don’t plant these. If it never freezes, get these, they’re excellent!

Well worth purchase! I would order from them again in a heartbeat!
Communication – there has been a lot of emails from the moment you order, sends you an actual photo of the plant that they will send, sends you updates as soon as they ship with a tracking number. Provides care guide, how to unbox, what to do when it arrives.
Product quality – this palm tree arrived very healthy and green. Signs of new growth and very vibrant green color.
Packaging – you could really tell that they researched on how to keep the plant secured while in transit. There were bamboo stakes to push the plant at the bottom of the box to prevent from getting crushed. Brown packaging cover to secure dirt from spilling out.
