Scientific Name: Psychotria nervosa

Common Names: Wild Coffee Plant, Semaphore

Overview: Though the Wild Coffee Plant (or Psychotria Nervosa…don’t you just love that name?) has berries, its beans won’t reward you with a great-tasting cup o’ joe. Its berries appear in summer after small white spring flowers (a favorite of birds and bees) ripen to red. The beans contain no caffeine, but can be roasted and consumed for a coffee-like beverage. But, the beans are not why Wild Coffee is so popular. Its glossy deep green leaves are marked with deep grooves, giving great texture to your landscaping. Many gardeners love to use Wild Coffee as a shade or privacy hedge.

Tolerant to shade, but partial to more sun, this tropical shrub can grow up to 6 feet tall.  It requires average water and grows easily, but is definitely cold sensitive.

Description

THIS GRACEFUL SHRUB BREWS UP COMPLIMENTS FROM PASSERS-BY

Psychotria nervosa, commonly known as wild coffee or semaphore, is an evergreen shrub native to subtropical regions of the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America. This versatile plant thrives in a range of habitats, from coastal dunes and hammocks to pine flatwoods and riverine forests. Typically reaching a height of 3 to 6 feet, its elliptical, glossy leaves exhibit prominent veins, lending it a distinctive, textured appearance.

Wild coffee produces small, fragrant, white flowers that attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and moths. These blooms later give way to vibrant red, coffee bean-like drupes that provide a vital food source for birds and other wildlife. Although not ideal for human consumption, the fruits offer an ornamental appeal, making Psychotria nervosa a popular choice for landscaping projects focused on promoting biodiversity and native species. This low-maintenance, drought-tolerant plant is ideal for both formal and informal garden settings, contributing to the conservation of local ecosystems while adding visual interest.
