Neither Palm nor Pine…But a Tropical Delight
The Pandanus Utilis, or Screw Pine, is a tropical evergreen that truly stands out in your yard. It’s mostly used as a single accent tree. It grows in a swirled pattern, with older leaf scars encircling the stems: hence the name “Screw.” The “Pine” comes from its edible pineapple-like fruits. Of special note are its aerial roots that seem to life the plant out of the ground. These sturdy roots actually keep the plant stable in strong wind and rain.
The Screw Pine needs plenty of room, though it is a slow grower. It can grow tall, and spread 10 to 15 ft. wide. Also, little red spines line the edges of its leaves. Be careful to stay away from these, so plant the Screw Pine away from walkways. They’ll thrive in everything from full sun to partial shade, and they’re salt and drought tolerant.
