The Horsetail Reed is actually considered a living fossil, having been on the planet for 300 million years. Related to a fern, smart landscapers often use it between walkways or along fences, pools or contained ponds. Its slender stems are hollow and jointed, similar to bamboo. A clump of stems together creates the bushy look that’s the inspiration for its name – Horsetail.
