Description
This Cactus is a Collectors Dream
The Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) is a strikingly beautiful and low-maintenance succulent native to the arid regions of Mexico. Its distinctive golden-yellow spines and spherical shape make it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens. This cactus is characterized by its globe-shaped body, which can reach up to 3 feet in diameter in its natural habitat. Its vibrant golden-yellow spines cover the entire surface of the plant, giving it a striking appearance. As the cactus matures, it may produce small, yellow flowers in the spring and summer months, adding to its aesthetic appeal.
Caring for your Barrel Cactus
Native to the deserts of central Mexico, the Golden Barrel Cactus thrives in hot, arid climates with well-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. It can be found growing in rocky slopes and hillsides, where it has adapted to survive in harsh conditions with minimal water.
Light
Golden Barrel Cacti require plenty of bright, direct sunlight to thrive. Place your cactus in a location where it can receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day, such as a south-facing window or a sunny outdoor spot. If growing indoors, consider using grow lights to supplement natural sunlight during the winter months.
Soil
Well-draining soil is essential for the health of your Golden Barrel Cactus. Use a commercial cactus mix or create your own by combining equal parts potting soil, sand, and perlite or pumice. Avoid using soil mixes that retain too much moisture, as this can lead to root rot.
Watering
Golden Barrel Cacti are drought-tolerant plants and are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and then water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency to mimic the plant’s natural dormancy period.
Fertilization
Fertilize your Golden Barrel Cactus sparingly during the growing season, typically from spring to early fall. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength, and apply it once a month. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months when the plant is dormant.
Repotting
Golden Barrel Cacti have relatively shallow root systems and do not require frequent repotting. Repot your cactus only when necessary, typically every 2-3 years or when it has outgrown its current container. Use gloves and a towel to carefully handle the cactus during repotting to avoid injury from the sharp spines.
Pest and Disease Control
Golden Barrel Cacti are relatively pest-resistant, but they can occasionally be affected by common cactus pests such as mealybugs and scale insects. Inspect your plant regularly for signs of pests, and treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Additionally, ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases.
Propagation
Golden Barrel Cacti can be propagated from seeds or offsets (also known as pups) that develop at the base of mature plants. To propagate from offsets, carefully remove them from the parent plant using a sharp, sterile knife and allow the cut ends to callus over for a few days. Plant the offsets in a well-draining soil mix and water sparingly until new roots develop.

Healthy Plant but was upside down on delivery. Cactus was head down on the soil. Roots were dried up. I had to transplant immediately.
Reason for 4 star.
