Scientific Name: Dypsis lutescens

Common Names: Areca Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Butterfly Palm

Overview: Dypsis lutescens, commonly known as the Areca or Golden Cane Palm, is an elegant and versatile tropical palm that enhances both indoor and outdoor spaces with its lush greenery and slender canes adorned in hues of gold and yellowwith feathered fronds that cascade gracefully. This evergreen beauty originates from Madagascar and is renowned for its adaptability and resilience. Suitable for containers and landscapes, the Golden Cane Palm thrives in partial shade to bright indirect light, and its moderate growth pace ensures it remains manageable even for beginners.

 

Please note that areca palm leaves and stems may have a little yellowing or spots to them, which is very normal and not harmful to the plant.

A VERSATILE FAVORITE – WHEREVER YOU PLACE IT

The Areca Palm is not only easy on the eyes, it helps to keep your indoor environments healthier. Little known facts: the Areca Palm is an air purifier and an effective humidifier, as it can transpire up to 1 liter of water per day. It’s also a great indoor choice for people with pets. The Areca is almost completely free of any toxins.

Folks in warmer climates may choose to plant their Areca outdoors. It can grow from 20 to 40 ft., with arched leaves that extend 6 to 10 ft. high. During the summer, it will feature little yellow flowers. But, this plant is not cold tolerant, and will not thrive in an area where temperatures dip below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Areca prefers filtered sunlight and well-drained soil. Use fertilizer from fall through winter. With just a bit of care for your indoor Areca, you’ll be rewarded with a lovely plant that grows from 5 to 7 ft. high.
