Description
This Fast Growing Ornamental Grass Will Spice Up the Garden
You love Lemongrass in Asian recipes, so why not grow it in your herb garden, or feature its graceful beauty along walkway borders or patio planters? Its arching linear leaves emit a welcome lemony fragrance, and grow up to 3 ft. tall in dense clumps. Lemongrass plant oils have been used for centuries in herbal medicines and perfumes.
Caring for Lemongrass
Lemongrass likes it hot – with lots of sun. It’s important to make sure its roots do not dry out. If situating indoors, make sure to place it in your sunniest window, and water only when the surface soil is dry to the touch.
Light
Lemongrass thrives in full sunlight, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct light each day. If you are growing Lemongrass indoors, place it near a south-facing window where it can receive ample sunlight. If natural light is insufficient, consider using grow lights to supplement its needs. Outdoors, choose a sunny spot in your garden to ensure robust growth.
Water
Lemongrass requires consistent moisture to thrive, especially during the growing season. Water the plant thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged, as overwatering can lead to root rot. During hot and dry periods, you may need to water more frequently. In cooler months, reduce the watering frequency but do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
Humidity is also important for Lemongrass. It thrives in humid environments, but it can adapt to lower humidity levels if necessary. If you live in a dry climate or are growing Lemongrass indoors, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing it on a humidity tray.
Soil
Lemongrass prefers well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0) is ideal. You can improve soil drainage and fertility by adding compost or aged manure.
When planting Lemongrass in containers, use a high-quality potting mix and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation. Repot Lemongrass every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its container. The best time to repot is in the spring when the plant is actively growing.
Fertilizing
Lemongrass is a heavy feeder and benefits from regular fertilization during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks from spring through early autumn. Organic options such as compost tea or fish emulsion can also provide essential nutrients. In the winter months, reduce fertilization as the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning
Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and health of your Lemongrass plant. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves and trim back overly long stalks to encourage bushier growth. Pruning is best done in the spring and summer.
Harvesting
Harvesting Lemongrass is easy and can be done throughout the growing season. To harvest, cut the stalks close to the base of the plant. Use a sharp knife or scissors to avoid damaging the plant. Fresh Lemongrass stalks can be used immediately in cooking or stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. You can also freeze or dry the stalks for long-term storage.
