Scientific Name: Clusia rosea

Common Names: Clusia Tree, Pitch Apple, Autograph Tree, Copey Bush

Overview: The Clusia rosea is known by a variety of names. The dark green leathery leaves are so tough, they can be carved into –hence the derivation of the name “Autograph Tree.” The name “Pitch Apple” is derived from the tree’s seeds that are surrounded by black material once used to caulk the seams of boats.

This perennial evergreen can be used as a wide shrub, or as a medium sized tree. It can grow to 25 ft. tall and beyond. In Summer, you’ll enjoy its pink or white blooms framed by its fat, paddle shaped leaves. It also has small green fruits that ripen to black, then split open to reveal the bright red seeds that birds adore. The Pitch Apple prefers full sun (but can tolerate partial shade), and well drained soil. Its hardy and salt-tolerant – ideal for a seaside home.

Description

Good Looks and Carefree Maintenance Will Have You Signing Up for the Autograph Tree

If you are looking for a foliage plant, you should consider planting a Clusia Rosea, also known as Copey Bush. This plant is native to the Caribbean and Central America. The plant features dark green tough leaves and has a simple care guide. It is a low-maintenance plant, and you do not have to go above and beyond to take care of it. It is also one of the most eye-catching plants and can be a prominent addition to your home or garden. However, to keep them indoors, you must invest in the right care guide.

Caring for your Clusia Rosea

Ideally, the Autograph Tree is easy to take care of, but there are some perimeters you need to notice. For instance, the plant is not very tolerant of cold weather, but it can still live without a lot of water. Let’s learn more about its care and ensure that the plant thrives under your care.

Light

If you are growing the Pitch Apple indoors, you must give them direct bright light for prolonged hours. These plants are the best fit for outdoors, but the plant will thrive if you can stimulate similar conditions inside your home.

However, these plants are adaptable and will adapt to the conditions you keep them in from the get-go. For instance, if you keep them in the partial shade of a window, they will learn to accept their surroundings and prosper. But do not change the light intensity abruptly, as that can harm the plant.

Soil

The best kind of soil for the Clusia Rosea is fast-draining soil. This plant is usually found growing on top of another plant, and the roots are not deep into the soil. The roots need to breathe and are highly susceptible to root rot. They will thrive if you keep them in organic soil; they should also be loose and sandy so the roots can breathe easily.

Water

For better growth, the plant needs moist soil at all times. However, it will not die if your soil is dry for a short period. However, during the initial stages of the plant, it is best to keep it moist as that will help the plant grow bigger and stronger.

Overwatering is harmful to the plant and that can be a reason for root rot. Use room temperature water when watering your Autograph Plant as cold water can be shocking.

Fertilizer

It is best to fertilize your plant at least three times a year for optimal growth. The best time to fertilize is during the growing season. Your choice of fertilizer should be granular, but if you want to fertilize your plants frequently, you can also use liquid fertilizer. Organic fertilizers are also a great choice and can produce great results.

Common Issues

Clusia Rosea is a great option to grow at home as it is not very affected by pests, and you won’t have to deal with many issues. Let’s look at all the pests and diseases that affect the plant.

Pests

Insects such as scale, aphids, and spider mites are problematic for the plant. They may cause damage to the plant but do not prove to be fatal. You must still get rid of the pests to improve your plant’s growth. You can use different organic pesticides, and that will help keep the insects away.

Disease

Two common diseases affect Clusia Rosea: opportunistic anaerobic bacteria and fungi. The main cause of these diseases is overwatering. Keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering, as that can become fatal for the plant. Other than these problems, you may not experience other diseases with the Autograph tree.

Pruning

Pruning is a very important step in the care of Autograph care. This plant has fast growth, which means you need to prune it to maintain its shape and healthy growth. It is best to prune the Autograph tree twice a year. You can do that during spring, and that will boost the growth of the tree. Ensure that you use the right tools so the plant does not contract the disease.

Propagation

To propagate Copey Bush, you need to use stem cuttings. You can also grow the plant from seeds, but using stem cuttings is a lot simpler. Choose a stem cutting that has several leaves and you can put it in water or soil. Be sure to use the right kind of soil; you can mix different things, such as peat, coarse sand, and perlite.

Potting/Repotting

As this is a fast-growing plant, you need to check on it regularly, in case it has outgrown its pot. If you like a smaller plant, you can keep it in a smaller pot, but if you like a big one, you can go for a bigger one. It is best to change pots as the roots can clump together, which will affect the plant’s health.

hi! Would this plant work as an indoor plant with medium indirect light? We are located in New York. Our planter is approx. 17″ diameter, so plenty of space for a large plant.

    thank you!!
