Overview: Like all prayer plants, the Calathea Ornata is known for its remarkable foliage. Its dark green glossy leaves are accented with pink pinstripes and a reddish purple underside. Though the Pin Stripe is not without some care requirements, it pays you back amply in beautiful color.

This Rainforest Native Will Add Exotic Color

Native to South American rainforests, the Pin Stripe Calathea thrives when you keep it true to its natural habitat: no direct sunlight, high humidity and no exposure to cold. For best results, water regularly and keep your Pin Stripe moist, but not wet or saturated. You may want to mist the leaves twice weekly. Make sure to keep the Pin Stripe away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. The higher humidity in a kitchen or bath is a good spot for the plant if you’re keeping it indoors. It is possible to keep the Pin Stripe outdoors, especially on patios, porches or decks. It will add amazing hues to beds and borders.

Caring for your Pinstripe Calathea

Calathea ornata is a relatively low-maintenance plant, but it does require specific care to thrive. Here are some care tips for Pinstripe Calathea:

Light

Pinstripe Calathea prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage its delicate leaves, so it is best to place it near a window with a sheer curtain.

Water

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s important to not let the plant sit in standing water.

Humidity

Pinstripe Calathea prefers a humid environment. You can increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or by placing a tray of water near the plant.

Temperature

Pinstripe Calathea prefers temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C). Avoid placing it in drafty areas or near air conditioning or heating vents.

Fertilizer

Fertilize the plant monthly during the growing season with a balanced houseplant fertilizer.
