Transforming Flowers Mark the Time

Brunfelsia grandiflora, commonly known as Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow, is a tropical plant native to Brazil. It is a small to medium-sized shrub that can grow up to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide with glossy, dark green leaves. The plant is best known for its stunning flowers that change color over time, starting out purple on the first day, fading to lavender on the second day, and finally becoming white on the third day.

Brunfelsia grandiflora is a popular choice for gardens and landscaping due to its attractive flowers and ease of care. It is also used in traditional medicine for its antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Despite its toxicity, it remains a favorite among gardeners and plant enthusiasts for its beauty and versatility.

Caring for your Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow

Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in warm, humid conditions. It prefers well-draining soil and regular watering but can tolerate some drought. The plant blooms best in full sun but can also grow in partial shade.

Watering

Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow plants need regular watering to thrive. They prefer moist, well-draining soil and should be watered deeply at least once a week during the growing season. The soil should be kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged, as this can lead to root rot.

In the winter, the plant should be watered less frequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can cause the plant to become waterlogged and can lead to root rot. On the other hand, underwatering can cause the plant to wilt and become stressed.

Light

Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow plants require bright, indirect light to thrive. They prefer full sun but can also grow in partial shade. If the plant is kept in too much shade, it may not produce as many flowers. However, if it is kept in direct sunlight for extended periods, the leaves may become scorched.

In hot climates, the plant may benefit from some afternoon shade to protect it from the intense sun. In cooler climates, the plant can be grown indoors as a houseplant or in a greenhouse where it can receive adequate light.

Soil

Yesterday-Today-and-Tomorrow plants prefer moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. The soil should be slightly acidic, with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. If the soil is too alkaline, the plant may not absorb nutrients properly and may develop yellowing leaves.

When planting the Brunfelsia grandiflora, make sure to dig a hole that is twice the size of the root ball. Mix in some compost or well-rotted manure to improve the soil’s fertility and texture. After planting, water the plant deeply to settle the soil and help the roots establish.

Pruning

Pruning is an essential part of Brunfelsia grandiflora care. It helps to shape the plant, promote healthy growth, and encourage flowering. The best time to prune the plant is in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.

To prune the plant, use sharp, clean pruning shears to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. Also, remove any crossed or rubbing branches to prevent them from becoming entangled. If the plant has become too leggy, you can also prune it back by up to one-third of its size.
