You’ve probably enjoyed Tamarind sauce at your favorite Asian restaurant. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a supply close at hand? The Tamarind is a magnificent evergreen tree that’s topped by a wide-spreading crown dotted with fragrant flowers. It can reach heights of up to 60 ft.

Its leaves, bark and pods are widely used by herbalists and chefs. For example, Tamarind is an ingredient in Worcestershire sauce. Its bark is widely used as a digestive. When incorporated into lotions, it can relieve sores and rashes. A decoction of Tamarind leaves is used against throat infection, cough and fever – and this is just a small listing of its benefits.

These beauties are great shade trees for your garden, if you’ve got the space. Established Tamarinds are drought tolerant, but will not do well if the temperatures dip.
